Developed by the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic in conjunction with the World Bank and the Inter-american Bank of Development in 1976, Playa Dorada Complex is based in Field and Club of Golf, public Club of Beach, sidewalks and avenues and other public services.
The first hotel in playa dorada was inaugurated in 1981, developed thanks to the help of the Central Bank of Dominican Republic. It was later sold to a North American company which delivers it to the Operator Jack Tar International.
More hotels started to open, surpassing the 10 hotels limit that the planners that have conceived (today there are 14 hotels, a Convention Center and a commercial center).
Located 15 minutes from Puerto Plata Airport is the complex known as "Playa Dorada". Situated on 250 acres, this complex is a self contained area offering travelers the choice of fifteen resorts, mall, rentals, discos, casinos, restaurants, and of course the 13 mile beautiful sandy beach of Playa Dorada. For your convience, most of these resorts have gone all-inclusive, though day passes are available from other resorts usually at their front desk. Nestled within the complex you will find the "Playa Dorado Mall."An open-air mall consisting of grocery stores, medical supplies, doctor, tour operators, souvenirs shops, bars (Cheers, Hemingways) fast food places (Pizza Hut and Archies) and world renowned "Harrison Jewelers." There are also three banks located within the mall "Banco Popular", "Banco de Reservas", "Banco del Exterioras" as well as an instant teller located on the outside of the building. (Money withdrawn will be converted to the Dominican Pesos).
The Playa Dorada Complex has facilities for meetings and conventions, cafeterias, gyms, excellent facilities for tennis and aquatic sports, one of the most prestigious golf courses of 18 hotels in the whole planet, designed by Robert Trent Jones Mr., one of the most recognized English architects. A fantastic mall, more than 47 restaurants, 3 casinos, bars and discos complete the incomparable offerings of Playa Dorada.
Free internet service is provide here as well. Owned by one of the tour companies "Mar Y Sol Tours", they allow free access as long as you can put up with them trying to sell you a tour ( there is no obligation to buy a tour though). If this bothers you, hassle free internet access is available at one of the stores that houses actually three business (Caribe Music, Azul Tours and Playa Dorada Internet access). Expect to pay a fee here and it is busy. An half hour is $39.00DR Pesos/$3.90 Canadian or $60RD pesos/$6.00 Canadian. They do have a special from 8:00am til 10:00am (Two computers for the price of one).
To keep yourself occupied at night there are three casinos and three discos located in the complex. Casinos are located in the "Allegr Jack Tar", "AMHSA Paradise Beach Resort" and the "Occidental Playa Dorada". The Discos are located at "Heavens (Andromeda)", "Playa Naco (Topps)" and "AMHSA Paradise Beach Resort (Crazy Moon)". All of them are open til 4:00am. Remember, these are pay bars. You will also find several restaurant of international cuisine, motorized water sports by the beach, carriage rides that will take you through the complex and a 18 hole golf course on the premises.
